[1197] "Venerable sir, how many enmities (verā) are there?" "Upāli, there are these five enmities. What five? The destruction of living beings, the taking of what is not given, misconduct in sensual pleasures, false speech, and indulgence in liquor, spirits, and intoxicants, which is a basis for heedlessness. These, Upāli, are the five enmities."
