[1198] "Venerable sir, how many abstinences (veramaṇī) are there?"
"Upāli, there are these five abstinences. What are the five? Abstinence from the destruction of living beings, abstinence from taking what is not given, abstinence from misconduct in sensual pleasures, abstinence from false speech, and abstinence from liquor, wine, and intoxicants which are a basis for heedlessness. These, Upāli, are the five abstinences."
