[1219] "Venerable sir, possessed of how many factors is a resident bhikkhu (āvāsika bhikkhu) deposited in hell as surely as if he were carried and put there?"
"Possessed of five factors, Upāli, a resident bhikkhu is deposited in hell as surely as if he were carried and put there. Which five? He takes a wrong course out of desire (chandāgati); he takes a wrong course out of hatred (dosāgati); he takes a wrong course out of delusion (mohāgati); he takes a wrong course out of fear (bhayāgati); and he uses what belongs to the Saṅgha as though it were his personal property. Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a resident bhikkhu is deposited in hell as surely as if he were carried and put there.
"Possessed of five factors, Upāli, a resident bhikkhu is deposited in heaven as surely as if he were carried and put there. Which five? He does not take a wrong course out of desire; he does not take a wrong course out of hatred; he does not take a wrong course out of delusion; he does not take a wrong course out of fear; and he does not use what belongs to the Saṅgha as though it were his personal property. Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a resident bhikkhu is deposited in heaven as surely as if he were carried and put there."
