[857] Therein, what are the eighteen grounds for causing schism (bhedakaravatthu)? Here a bhikkhu explains what is not Dhamma as Dhamma; explains Dhamma as not Dhamma; explains what is not Vinaya as Vinaya; explains Vinaya as not Vinaya; explains what was not spoken, not uttered, by the Tathāgata as spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata; explains what was spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata as not spoken, not uttered, by the Tathāgata; explains what was not practised by the Tathāgata as practised by the Tathāgata; explains what was practised by the Tathāgata as not practised by the Tathāgata; explains what was not laid down by the Tathāgata as laid down by the Tathāgata; explains what was laid down by the Tathāgata as not laid down by the Tathāgata; explains an offence (āpatti) as not an offence; explains what is not an offence as an offence; explains a light offence as a grave offence; explains a grave offence as a light offence; explains an offence with remainder as an offence without remainder; explains an offence without remainder as an offence with remainder; explains a grievous offence as an offence that is not grievous; explains an offence that is not grievous as a grievous offence. These are the eighteen grounds for causing schism.
