[859] Therein, what are the seven means of settlement (samathā)? Settlement in the presence (sammukhāvinaya), settlement by mindfulness (sativinaya), settlement on account of past insanity (amūḷhavinaya), acting upon admission (paṭiññātakaraṇa), decision by majority (yebhuyyasikā), pronouncement of aggravated wrongdoing (tassapāpiyasikā),¹ covering over as with grass (tiṇavatthāraka). These are the seven means of settlement.
