[972] There are four grounds for breaking the rains residence (vassa) without an offense (āpatti): the Saṅgha is divided; or there are those who wish to divide the Saṅgha; or there is danger to life; or there is danger to the holy life (brahmacariya).
There are four kinds of verbal misconduct (vacīduccarita): false speech (musāvāda), divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter.
There are four kinds of verbal good conduct (vacīsucarita): truthful speech, non-divisive speech, gentle speech, and measured speech.
