[982] A bhikkhu possessed of five factors must not live without dependence (nissaya): he does not know the Uposatha; he does not know the Uposatha proceedings (uposathakamma); he does not know the Pātimokkha; he does not know the recitation of the Pātimokkha (pātimokkhuddesa); and he is of less than five rains' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of five factors may live without dependence: he knows the Uposatha; he knows the Uposatha proceedings; he knows the Pātimokkha; he knows the recitation of the Pātimokkha; and he is of five rains' standing or of more than five rains.
A bhikkhu possessed of a further five factors must not live without dependence: he does not know the Pavāraṇā; he does not know the Pavāraṇā proceedings (pavāraṇākamma); he does not know the Pātimokkha; he does not know the recitation of the Pātimokkha; and he is of less than five rains' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of five factors may live without dependence: he knows the Pavāraṇā; he knows the Pavāraṇā proceedings; he knows the Pātimokkha; he knows the recitation of the Pātimokkha; and he is of five rains' standing or of more than five rains.
A bhikkhu possessed of a further five factors must not live without dependence: he does not know what is an offense (āpatti) and what is not an offense; he does not know a light offense and a heavy offense; he does not know an offense with remainder and an offense without remainder; he does not know a grave offense and an offense that is not grave; and he is of less than five rains' standing.
