Vinayapiṭaka · Parivāra · Vol. 8 · Section 984

[984] There are five kinds of seeds (bījajāta): seeds propagated from roots (mūlabīja), seeds propagated from stems (khandhabīja), seeds propagated from joints (phaḷubīja), seeds propagated from cuttings (aggabīja), and seeds propagated from seeds themselves (bījabīja) as the fifth. Fruit may be consumed when made allowable for ascetics in five ways: treated with fire, treated with a knife, treated with a fingernail, seedless, and with the seeds removed as the fifth.
