[985] There are five purifications (visuddhi): having recited the introduction (nidāna), the remainder should be announced as heard — this is the first purification.
Having recited the introduction, having recited the four pārājikas, the remainder should be announced as heard — this is the second purification.
Having recited the introduction, having recited the four pārājikas, having recited the thirteen saṅghādisesas, the remainder should be announced as heard — this is the third purification.
Having recited the introduction, having recited the four pārājikas, having recited the thirteen saṅghādisesas, having recited the two aniyatas, the remainder should be announced as heard — this is the fourth purification.
The fifth is by recitation in full.
There are another five purifications: the recitation of the suttas (suttuddesa), the uposatha of purity (pārisuddhi-uposatha), the uposatha of determination (adhiṭṭhāna-uposatha), the uposatha of concord (sāmaggī-uposatha), and the pavāraṇā as the fifth.
