[16] Or just as some honourable ascetics and brahmins, while enjoying food given in faith (saddhādeyya), remain engaged in argumentative talk (viggāhikakathā) of such a kind as this — namely: "You do not understand this Dhamma and Discipline; I understand this Dhamma and Discipline. How could you understand this Dhamma and Discipline? You are practising wrongly; I am practising rightly. What I say is consistent; what you say is inconsistent. You said afterwards what should have been said first; you said first what should have been said afterwards. What you have long rehearsed has been overturned. A charge has been laid against your doctrine. You stand refuted. Go about to rescue your doctrine — or disentangle yourself, if you can!" — the ascetic Gotama abstains from argumentative talk of such a kind. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, might an ordinary person (puthujjana), speaking praise of the Tathāgata, speak.
