[21] 'Or whereas some honorable ascetics and brahmins, while enjoying food given in faith, make their living by wrong livelihood (micchājīva) through low arts (tiracchānavijjā) of such a kind as this — namely: "There will be a marching forth of the kings; there will be no marching forth of the kings; there will be an advance of the kings within; there will be a retreat of the kings without; there will be an advance of the kings without; there will be a retreat of the kings within; there will be victory for the kings within; there will be defeat for the kings without; there will be victory for the kings without; there will be defeat for the kings within; thus there will be victory for this one, and there will be defeat for that one" — the ascetic Gotama abstains from wrong livelihood through low arts of such a kind as this.' Thus indeed, Bhikkhus, might an ordinary person (puthujjana) speak when speaking praise of the Tathāgata.
