[22] 'Or whereas some honored ascetics and brahmins, while enjoying food given in faith, earn their living by wrong livelihood, by such low lore (tiracchānavijjā) as this — that is: predicting "There will be an eclipse of the moon; there will be an eclipse of the sun; there will be an eclipse of a constellation; the moon and the sun will go on their proper course; the moon and the sun will go off course; the constellations will go on their proper course; the constellations will go off course; there will be a fall of meteors; there will be a burning of the quarters of the sky; there will be an earthquake; there will be thunder in the heavens; there will be a rising, a setting, a darkening, a brightening of the moon, the sun, and the constellations; such will be the result of the eclipse of the moon; such will be the result of the eclipse of the sun; such will be the result of the eclipse of a constellation; such will be the result of the moon and the sun going on their proper course; such will be the result of the moon and the sun going off course; such will be the result of the constellations going on their proper course; such will be the result of the constellations going off course; such will be the result of the fall of meteors; such will be the result of the burning of the quarters of the sky; such will be the result of the earthquake; such will be the result of the thunder in the heavens; such will be the result of the rising, the setting, the darkening, the brightening of the moon, the sun, and the constellations" — the ascetic Gotama refrains from wrong livelihood through such low lore as this.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, might an ordinary person speak when speaking praise of the Tathāgata.
