[270] When this was said, the naked ascetic Kassapa said to the Blessed One: "But what, worthy Gotama, is that accomplishment in virtue (sīlasampadā)? What is the accomplishment in mind (cittasampadā)? What is the accomplishment in wisdom (paññāsampadā)?"
"Here, Kassapa, a Tathāgata arises in the world, an Arahant, a Perfectly Self-Awakened One … (to be expanded in full). And how, Kassapa, is a bhikkhu accomplished in virtue? Here, Kassapa, a bhikkhu, having abandoned the destruction of living beings, abstains from the destruction of living beings; with rod laid down, with weapon laid down, conscientious, endowed with kindness, he dwells sympathetic to the welfare of all living beings. This too pertains to his accomplishment in virtue. …
"Endowed with this noble aggregate of virtue, he experiences within himself a blameless happiness. Thus, Kassapa, is a bhikkhu accomplished in virtue. This, Kassapa, is that accomplishment in virtue. …
"He enters and dwells in the first jhāna. This too pertains to his accomplishment in mind. This, Kassapa, is the accomplishment in mind. …
"He directs and inclines the mind (citta) toward knowledge and vision (ñāṇadassana). This too pertains to his accomplishment in wisdom. … He understands: '… there is no more coming to any state of being.' This too is his accomplishment in wisdom. This, Kassapa, is the accomplishment in knowledge (ñāṇa).
"And, Kassapa, than this accomplishment in virtue, accomplishment in mind, and accomplishment in wisdom, there is no other accomplishment in virtue, accomplishment in mind, or accomplishment in wisdom that is higher or more sublime."
