[306] "Poṭṭhapāda, if others should ask us: 'But what, friend, is that gross acquisition of a self (oḷārika attapaṭilābha) for the abandoning of which you teach the Dhamma, so that, as you practice accordingly, defiling qualities (saṃkilesikā dhammā) will be abandoned in you, cleansing qualities (vodāniyā dhammā) will increase, and you will, having realized it for yourselves in this very life by direct knowledge (abhiññā), enter upon and dwell in the fullness and abundance of wisdom?' — being asked thus, we would answer them thus: 'This itself, friend, is that gross acquisition of a self for the abandoning of which we teach the Dhamma, so that, as you practice accordingly, defiling qualities will be abandoned in you, cleansing qualities will increase, and you will, having realized it for yourselves in this very life by direct knowledge, enter upon and dwell in the fullness and abundance of wisdom.'"
