[352] Now at that time an evil view of this kind had arisen in the brahmin Lohicca: "Here an ascetic or brahmin might attain a wholesome state; but having attained a wholesome state, he should not declare it to another. For what can one person do for another? It is just as if, having cut an old bond, one were to make another new bond — of such a kind, I declare, is this evil quality of greed. For what can one person do for another?"
The brahmin Lohicca heard: "It is said that the ascetic Gotama, the son of the Sakyans, gone forth from the Sakyan clan, wandering on tour among the Kosalans with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, with some five hundred bhikkhus, has arrived at Sālavatikā. And concerning that worthy Gotama such a fair report of fame has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One … a Buddha, a Blessed One.' Having himself realized with direct knowledge (abhiññā) this world with its devas, its Māras, and its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans, he makes it known. He teaches a Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and with its phrasing; he proclaims the holy life entirely complete and pure. Good indeed it is to see arahants such as that."
