[358] "Thus it seems, Lohicca, that one who would speak thus: 'The brahmin Lohicca resides in Sālavatikā; whatever revenue and produce arises in Sālavatikā, the brahmin Lohicca alone should enjoy it and should not give to others' — one who speaks thus is a maker of obstacles for those who live in dependence upon him. Being a maker of obstacles, he is one devoid of compassion for their welfare; in one devoid of compassion for their welfare, a hostile mind (citta) becomes established; when a hostile mind is established, there is wrong view.
"In just the same way, Lohicca, one who would speak thus: 'Should an ascetic or brahmin here attain a wholesome dhamma, having attained that wholesome dhamma he should not declare it to another — for what can one person do for another? It is just as if, having cut an old bond … do for another?' — one who speaks thus is a maker of obstacles for those clansmen who, relying upon the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata, attain such lofty distinction as this: they realize the fruit of stream-entry, they realize the fruit of once-return, they realize the fruit of non-return, they realize arahantship — and for those who bring to maturity the divine embryos for the arising of divine existences. Being a maker of obstacles, he is one devoid of compassion for their welfare; in one devoid of compassion for their welfare, a hostile mind becomes established; when a hostile mind is established, there is wrong view. And for one of wrong view, Lohicca, I declare one of two destinations: hell or the animal womb."
