[158] Now at that time, as a certain bhikkhu was crossing a river, a cloth (sāṭaka) that had slipped from the hands of some dyers caught on his foot. That bhikkhu took hold of it, thinking, "I shall give it to the owners." The owners accused that bhikkhu: "You are no ascetic!" He became remorseful … "Bhikkhu, there is no offense (anāpatti) for one without the intention to steal (theyyacitta)."
Now at that time, as a certain bhikkhu was crossing a river, a cloth that had slipped from the hands of some dyers caught on his foot. That bhikkhu, thinking, "Before the owners see it," took hold of it with the intention to steal. The owners accused that bhikkhu: "You are no ascetic!"
