[128] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, having gone to a dyer's drying-ground and seen a costly cloth, aroused a mind of theft (theyyacitta). He was remorseful: "Could it be that I have committed an offense entailing expulsion (pārājika)?" He informed the Blessed One of this matter. "There is no offense, bhikkhu, in the mere arising of a mind (citta)."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, having gone to a dyer's drying-ground and seen a costly cloth, touched it with a mind of theft. He was remorseful … "There is no offense entailing expulsion, bhikkhu; there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, having gone to a dyer's drying-ground and seen a costly cloth, with a mind of theft made it quiver. He was remorseful … "There is no offense entailing expulsion, bhikkhu; there is a grave offense (thullaccaya)."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, having gone to a dyer's drying-ground and seen a costly cloth, with a mind of theft moved it from its place. He was remorseful … "Bhikkhu, you have committed an offense entailing expulsion."
