[433] **"Bought with money" (dhanakkītā)** means: having bought her with money, he makes her live with him. **"One who dwells by choice" (chandavāsinī)** means: the beloved makes the beloved live with him.¹ **"One who dwells for goods" (bhogavāsinī)** means: having given goods, he makes her live with him. **"One who dwells for cloth" (paṭavāsinī)** means: having given cloth, he makes her live with him. **"One of the water-bowl" (odapattakinī)** means: having touched a bowl of water, he makes her live with him. **"One whose head-pad has been set down" (obhatacumbaṭā)** means: having taken down her head-pad,² he makes her live with him. **"A slave" (dāsī)** means: she is both a slave and a wife. **"A servant" (kammakārī)** means: she is both a servant and a wife. **"One brought by the flag" (dhajāhaṭā)** means: one brought as a captive is so called. **"A momentary wife" (muhuttikā)** means: one for the occasion is so called.
¹ Pali: *piyo piyaṃ vāseti* — literally "the dear one makes the dear one live [with him]"; the masculine *piyo* is subject, hence "with him," but the phrase itself is reciprocal and ungendered in object.
² *cumbaṭa*: the coiled pad placed on the head for carrying burdens; setting it down signifies release from load-bearing labour upon becoming a wife.
