[597] **"That bhikkhu"** means: that bhikkhu who is a schism-maker in the Saṅgha (saṅghabhedaka). **"By the bhikkhus"** means: by other bhikkhus. Those who see and those who hear — by them he should be admonished thus: "Let the venerable one not strive for the schism of a united Saṅgha, nor persist in taking up and upholding a legal issue (adhikaraṇa) conducive to schism. Let the venerable one be reconciled with the Saṅgha; for a united Saṅgha, in concord, without dispute, with a single recitation, dwells at ease." He should be admonished a second time; he should be admonished a third time. If he relinquishes it, that is good; if he does not relinquish it, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). If, having heard, they do not admonish him, there is an offense of wrong-doing. That bhikkhu, having been drawn even into the midst of the Saṅgha, should be admonished thus: "Let the venerable one not strive for the schism of a united Saṅgha, nor persist in taking up and upholding a legal issue conducive to schism. Let the venerable one be reconciled with the Saṅgha; for a united Saṅgha, in concord, without dispute, with a single recitation, dwells at ease." He should be admonished a second time; he should be admonished a third time. If he relinquishes it, that is good; if he does not relinquish it, there is an offense of wrong-doing.
