[214] "Venerable sir, when one cultivates what kind of acquisition of perception (saññāpaṭilābha) do unwholesome qualities (akusalā dhammā) decline and wholesome qualities (kusalā dhammā) increase? Here, venerable sir, a certain person is not covetous: he dwells with perception (saññā) accompanied by non-covetousness (anabhijjhā); he is without ill will: he dwells with perception accompanied by non-ill will; he is without cruelty: he dwells with perception accompanied by non-harming (avihesā). Venerable sir, when one cultivates such an acquisition of perception, unwholesome qualities decline and wholesome qualities increase.
"So it was with reference to this that it was said by the Blessed One: 'Bhikkhus, I say that acquisition of perception is of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated; and each of the two is itself an acquisition of perception.'"
