[226] "Sāriputta, when one cultivates what kind of acquisition of individual existence (attabhāvapaṭilābha) do unwholesome qualities (akusalā dhammā) decline and wholesome qualities (kusalā dhammā) increase? Sāriputta, for one who has generated an unafflicted (abyāpajjha) acquisition of individual existence—since it conduces to the state of completion (pariniṭṭhitabhāva)—unwholesome qualities decline and wholesome qualities increase.
"When it was said by me: 'Bhikkhus, I say that acquisition of individual existence is of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated; and each of the two is itself an acquisition of individual existence'—it was with reference to this that it was said.
"Sāriputta, when the meaning of this statement of mine, spoken in brief without the meaning being analyzed in detail, the meaning should be seen in detail thus."
