[550] Then, when that night had passed, the Venerable Samiddhi approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Samiddhi said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, here I, having risen at the time near dawn, went to the Tapoda hot springs to bathe my limbs. Having bathed my limbs at the Tapoda and come out, I stood in one robe drying my limbs. Then, venerable sir, when the night was far advanced, a certain deity of surpassing beauty, illuminating the entire Tapoda, approached me; having approached, it stood to one side. Standing to one side, that deity said this to me: 'Bhikkhu, do you remember the summary (uddesa) and the analysis (vibhaṅga) of the one who has one fine night (bhaddekaratta)?' When this was said, venerable sir, I said this to that deity: 'Friend, I do not remember the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night. But do you, friend, remember the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night?' 'Bhikkhu, I too do not remember the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night. But do you, bhikkhu, remember the verses on the one who has one fine night?' 'Friend, I do not remember the verses on the one who has one fine night. But do you, friend, remember the verses on the one who has one fine night?' 'Bhikkhu, I too do not remember the verses on the one who has one fine night. Learn, bhikkhu, the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night; master, bhikkhu, the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night; remember, bhikkhu, the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night. Beneficial, bhikkhu, is the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night, and fundamental to the spiritual life.' That deity said this, venerable sir; having said this, it vanished right there. It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the summary and the analysis of the one who has one fine night."
"Then, bhikkhu, listen and attend well; I shall speak." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Samiddhi replied to the Blessed One.
