[569] Then the venerable Lomasakaṅgiya, when that night had passed, set his lodging in order and, taking bowl and robe, set out wandering toward Sāvatthī. Wandering by stages, he came to Sāvatthī, to Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park, and approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the venerable Lomasakaṅgiya said this to the Blessed One:
"Venerable sir, on one occasion I was dwelling among the Sakyans, at Kapilavatthu, in the Nigrodha Park. Then, venerable sir, when the night was far advanced, a certain deity (devaputta) of surpassing beauty, illuminating the entire Nigrodha Park, approached me; having approached, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, venerable sir, that deity said this to me: 'Bhikkhu, do you remember the summary (uddesa) and the analysis (vibhaṅga) of the one who has one auspicious night (bhaddekaratta)?' When this was said, venerable sir, I said this to that deity: 'Friend, I do not remember the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night. But do you, friend, remember the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night?' 'I too, bhikkhu, do not remember the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night. But do you, bhikkhu, remember the verses of the one who has one auspicious night?' 'Friend, I do not remember the verses of the one who has one auspicious night. But do you, friend, remember the verses of the one who has one auspicious night?' 'I do, bhikkhu, remember the verses of the one who has one auspicious night.' 'But how, friend, do you remember the verses of the one who has one auspicious night?' 'Bhikkhu, on one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Tāvatiṃsa gods, at the foot of the Pāricchattaka tree, on the Paṇḍukambala stone. There the Blessed One spoke the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night to the Tāvatiṃsa gods:
One should not run back to the past …
That one indeed "the one who has one auspicious night" —
so the peaceful sage declares.
Thus, bhikkhu, do I remember the verses of the one who has one auspicious night. Learn, bhikkhu, the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night; master, bhikkhu, the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night; remember, bhikkhu, the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night. Beneficial, bhikkhu, is the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night, and fundamental to the holy life.' This, venerable sir, is what that deity said; having said this, he vanished right there. It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the summary and the analysis of the one who has one auspicious night."
