[571] The Blessed One said this:
"One should not run back to the past,
nor place hope in the future;
what is past has been abandoned,
and the future has not yet been reached.
Whoever sees with insight the present dhamma,
right where it arises, in each case —
unvanquished, unshakable —
having known that, let him cultivate it.
Today itself the effort (ātappa) must be made;
who knows whether death (maraṇa) may come tomorrow?
For there is no bargaining for us
with Death (maccu) and his great army.
One who dwells thus, ardent (ātāpī),
untiring by day and by night —
it is he, indeed, whom the peaceful sage (muni)
declares to be 'one who has a single auspicious night' (bhaddekaratta)."
