[814] "'The six classes of consciousness should be understood' — thus indeed this was said. In dependence on what was this said? In dependence on the eye and forms there arises eye-consciousness; in dependence on the ear and sounds there arises ear-consciousness; in dependence on the nose and odors there arises nose-consciousness; in dependence on the tongue and tastes there arises tongue-consciousness; in dependence on the body and tangibles there arises body-consciousness; in dependence on the mind and dhammas there arises mind-consciousness. 'The six classes of consciousness should be understood' — thus when this was said, it was in dependence on this that it was said. This is the third set of six.
