[581] "Ānanda, I do not say that gain, honor, and praise (lābhasakkārasiloka) are an obstacle to that unshakable liberation of mind (akuppā cetovimutti) of his. But, Ānanda, as for those pleasant dwellings in this very life (diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārā) which have been attained by him as he dwells diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute — I say that gain, honor, and praise are an obstacle to these.
So dreadful, Ānanda, are gain, honor, and praise — bitter, harsh, obstructive to the attainment of the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema). Therefore, Ānanda, you should train thus: 'We shall abandon gain, honor, and praise that have arisen; and gain, honor, and praise that have arisen shall not persist overwhelming our mind (citta).' Thus indeed, Ānanda, should you train."
