Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Khandhavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 17 · Section 286

[286] "And what, bhikkhus, is the origin of identity (sakkāya)? It is this craving (taṇhā) that leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, delighting now here, now there; that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for non-existence. This, bhikkhus, is called the origin of identity."
