[602] At Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of meditators (jhāyī). Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is skilled in attainment regarding concentration (samādhi) but is not one who practices with perseverance (sātaccakārī) in concentration. But here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is one who practices with perseverance in concentration but is not skilled in attainment regarding concentration. But here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is neither skilled in attainment regarding concentration nor one who practices with perseverance in concentration. But here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is both skilled in attainment regarding concentration and one who practices with perseverance in concentration. Therein … and the finest.
