Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Khandhavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 17 · Section 611

[611] At Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of meditators (jhāyī). Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator practices persistence in concentration (samādhi) but does not do what is suitable for concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator does what is suitable for concentration but does not practice persistence in concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator neither practices persistence in concentration nor does what is suitable for concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator both practices persistence in concentration and does what is suitable for concentration. Therein, bhikkhus, the meditator who both practices persistence in concentration and does what is suitable for concentration — he is the foremost, the best, the preeminent, the highest, and the most excellent of these four kinds of meditators. Just as, bhikkhus, from a cow comes milk, from milk curds, from curds butter, from butter ghee, and from ghee the cream of ghee, which is reckoned the foremost of them all — even so, bhikkhus, the meditator who both practices persistence in concentration and does what is suitable for concentration is the foremost, the best, the preeminent, the highest, and the most excellent of these four kinds of meditators. This is what the Blessed One said. Elated, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's statement. (The fifty expositions should be elaborated in full.) The Samādhi Saṃyutta is concluded. Its summary (uddāna): Concentration, attainment, steadiness, emergence, with pliancy and object, range, resolve, acting with respect, acting with persistence, and also what is suitable. The Khandhavāravagga Saṃyutta is concluded. Therein the summary of chapters: Nakulapitā, Impermanence, the Burden, and Not Yours, With Self as an Island — this fifty is declared the first. The Means, the Arahants, Being Devoured, the Elders, with Flowers as the fifth — the middle fifty was proclaimed by the Fully Awakened One. The End, the Dhamma-speakers, Ignorance, Hot Embers, with Views as the fifth — the third fifty has been spoken, declared to be the Collection. The Aggregates, Rādha, and Views, Descent, with Arising and with Defilement, Sāriputta and the Nāgas, the Supaṇṇas, those of the Gandhabba host, the Cloud Devas and Vacchagotta, and with Jhāna there are thirteen.
