[674] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus!" "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
"Bhikkhus, I will teach you the unconditioned (asaṅkhata) and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the unconditioned? The destruction of lust (rāga), the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion — this, bhikkhus, is called the unconditioned.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatāsati) — this, bhikkhus, is called the path leading to the unconditioned.
"Thus, bhikkhus, the unconditioned has been taught to you by me, and the path leading to the unconditioned has been taught. Bhikkhus, whatever should be done by a teacher who seeks the welfare of his disciples, out of compassion, sympathizing with them, that has been done for you by me. These, bhikkhus, are the roots of trees; these are empty dwellings. Meditate, bhikkhus; do not be negligent, lest you be filled with regret later. This is our instruction to you."
