[685] Bhikkhus, I will teach you the unconditioned (asaṅkhata) and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that.
And what, bhikkhus, is the unconditioned? The destruction of lust (rāga), the destruction of hatred (dosa), the destruction of delusion (moha): this, bhikkhus, is called the unconditioned.
And what, bhikkhus, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Serenity (samatha): this, bhikkhus, is called the path leading to the unconditioned.
Thus, bhikkhus, the unconditioned has been taught to you by me, and the path leading to the unconditioned has been taught. Whatever, bhikkhus, should be done by a teacher for his disciples—seeking their welfare, compassionate, out of compassion—that has been done for you by me. These, bhikkhus, are the roots of trees; these are empty dwellings. Meditate, bhikkhus; do not be negligent; do not be remorseful later. This is our instruction to you.
