[1174] Bhikkhus, it is because of having developed and cultivated the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda) that a bhikkhu, with the destruction of the taints (āsava), realizes for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and having entered upon it, dwells therein. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to desire and with volitional formations of striving; he develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to energy … concentration due to mind … concentration due to investigation and with volitional formations of striving. It is because of having developed and cultivated these four bases of spiritual power, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, with the destruction of the taints, realizes for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon it, dwells therein.
