[1116] Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhus in the past, through the destruction of the taints (āsava), realized for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and, having entered upon it, dwelt therein — all of them did so because of having developed and cultivated the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda). Whatever bhikkhus in the future, through the destruction of the taints, will realize for themselves with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and, having entered upon it, will dwell therein — all of them will do so because of having developed and cultivated the four bases of spiritual power. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the basis of spiritual power possessed of concentration (samādhi) due to desire and volitional formations of striving; he develops the basis of spiritual power possessed of concentration due to energy … concentration due to mind (citta) … concentration due to inquiry and volitional formations of striving.
