[1358] "Ānanda, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu, breathing in (assasanto) long, understands: 'I breathe in long'; or breathing out (passasanto) long, understands: 'I breathe out long'; breathing in short, understands: 'I breathe in short'; or breathing out short, understands: 'I breathe out short'; he trains thus: 'I shall breathe in experiencing the whole body'; he trains thus: 'I shall breathe out experiencing the whole body'; he trains thus: 'I shall breathe in calming the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra)'; he trains thus: 'I shall breathe out calming the bodily formation' — on that occasion, Ānanda, the bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassanā), ardent (ātāpī), clearly comprehending (sampajāno), possessed of mindfulness (sati), having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world (abhijjhā-domanassa). For what reason? Because I say, Ānanda, that this — namely, the in-breath and the out-breath — is a certain body among bodies. Therefore, Ānanda, on that occasion the bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world."
