[1383] "Ānanda, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu trains thus: 'Experiencing rapture, I shall breathe in' … 'Experiencing pleasure' … 'Experiencing the mental formation (cittasaṅkhāra)' … ; trains thus: 'Tranquilizing the mental formation, I shall breathe in'; trains thus: 'Tranquilizing the mental formation, I shall breathe out' — on that occasion, Ānanda, the bhikkhu dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. For what reason? Because, Ānanda, I say that this — namely, careful attention to the in-breaths and out-breaths — is a certain one among feelings. Therefore, Ānanda, on that occasion the bhikkhu dwells contemplating feelings in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world."
