[1426] "Friend, it is because of the possession of four things that this people has been declared by the Blessed One to be stream-enterers (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as their destination. Of which four? Here, friend, a noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: 'Such indeed is that Blessed One … teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' In the Dhamma … In the Saṅgha … He possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones—unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). It is because of the possession of these four things, friend, that this people has been declared by the Blessed One to be stream-enterers, no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as their destination."
