[1617] The setting is at Kapilavatthu. The Blessed One said this to Nandiya the Sakyan, who was seated to one side: "Nandiya, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) who possesses four qualities is a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to downfall, fixed in destiny, with awakening as his final goal. Which four? Here, Nandiya, a noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One … teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' … in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha. … He possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones — unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). Nandiya, a noble disciple who possesses these four qualities is a stream-enterer, no longer subject to downfall, fixed in destiny, with awakening as his final goal."
