[1618] The setting at Kapilavatthu. (The approach [to the Blessed One] is to be supplied.) The Blessed One said this to Bhaddiya the Sakyan as he sat to one side: "Bhaddiya, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) who possesses four things is a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to downfall, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as his destination. Which four? Here, Bhaddiya, a noble disciple [possesses confirmed confidence] in the Buddha … in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha … He possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones — unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). Possessing these four things, Bhaddiya, a noble disciple is a stream-enterer, no longer subject to downfall, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as his destination."
