[1514] "Godha, possessing how many qualities do you understand a person to be a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the states of deprivation (avinipātadhamma), fixed in destiny, with awakening as his final goal?"
"Mahānāma, possessing three qualities I understand a person to be a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with awakening as his final goal. What three? Here, Mahānāma, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One … teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' In the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha he possesses confirmed confidence: 'The Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing well … the unsurpassed field of merit for the world.' Possessing these three qualities, Mahānāma, I understand a person to be a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with awakening as his final goal."
