[1619] The setting is Kapilavatthu. (The account of the approach should be supplied.) The Blessed One said this to Mahānāma the Sakyan, who was seated to one side: "Mahānāma, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) who possesses four things is a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to downfall, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as his destination. Which four? Here, Mahānāma, a noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha: 'Thus indeed is he, the Blessed One … teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' In the Dhamma … In the Saṅgha …. He possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones — unbroken, … conducive to concentration (samādhi). Possessing these four things, Mahānāma, a noble disciple is a stream-enterer, no longer subject to downfall, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as his destination."
