[148] And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu who has a good friend (kalyāṇamitta) develop the Noble Eightfold Path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga), how does he cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view (sammādiṭṭhi) dependent on seclusion (viveka), dependent on dispassion (virāga), dependent on cessation, ripening in relinquishment (vossagga) … he develops right concentration (sammāsamādhi) dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, ripening in relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu who has a good friend develops the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path.
