[668] Bhikkhus, just as the river Gaṅgā slants toward the east, slopes toward the east, inclines toward the east, even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), cultivating the seven factors of awakening, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna. And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu developing the seven factors of awakening, cultivating the seven factors of awakening, slant toward Nibbāna, slope toward Nibbāna, incline toward Nibbāna? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the mindfulness factor of awakening … develops the equanimity factor of awakening, dependent on seclusion (viveka), dependent on dispassion (virāga), dependent on cessation (nirodha), maturing in release (vossagga). It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu developing the seven factors of awakening, cultivating the seven factors of awakening, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna.
