[669] Bhikkhus, there are these five fetters (saṃyojana) pertaining to the higher realms. What five? Lust for form, lust for the formless, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance (avijjā). These, bhikkhus, are the five fetters pertaining to the higher realms. For the direct knowledge (abhiññā) of these five fetters pertaining to the higher realms, for their full understanding, for their utter destruction, for their abandoning, the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) are to be developed. What seven? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the awakening factor of mindfulness … he develops the awakening factor of equanimity, dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, maturing in relinquishment. For the direct knowledge of these five fetters pertaining to the higher realms, for their full understanding, for their utter destruction, for their abandoning, these seven factors of awakening are to be developed.
