[670] Bhikkhus, just as the river Gaṅgā slants toward the east, slopes toward the east, inclines toward the east — even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), cultivating the seven factors of awakening, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna. And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu developing the seven factors of awakening, cultivating the seven factors of awakening, slant toward Nibbāna, slope toward Nibbāna, incline toward Nibbāna? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the mindfulness factor of awakening … he develops the equanimity factor of awakening, which culminates in the removal of lust (rāga), culminates in the removal of hatred, culminates in the removal of delusion. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu developing the seven factors of awakening, cultivating the seven factors of awakening, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna.
