[1085] Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge, for the full understanding, for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters (uddhambhāgiyāni saññojanāni), the five faculties (indriya) are to be developed. Which five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment … he develops the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge, for the full understanding, for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters, these five faculties are to be developed. (As the Maggasaṃyutta is expounded in full, so should "based upon seclusion" be expounded in full here.)
