[383] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus, blocking off the best sleeping places for themselves, made the elder bhikkhus move out. Then it occurred to the group-of-six bhikkhus: "By what means might we spend the rains right here?" Then the group-of-six bhikkhus lay down encroaching upon the elder bhikkhus, thinking: "Whoever finds it too cramped will depart." Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and complained: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus lie down encroaching upon the elder bhikkhus?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that you lie down encroaching upon the elder bhikkhus?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men, lie down encroaching upon the elder bhikkhus? This, foolish men, does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu, knowingly, in a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, should lie down encroaching upon a bhikkhu who arrived there before him, thinking, 'Whoever finds it too cramped will depart' — making just this the reason and nothing else — commits a pācittiya."
