[384] **Whoever:** whoever, of whatever sort … **Bhikkhu:** … this is the bhikkhu intended in this context.
A dwelling (vihāra) called **belonging to the Saṅgha (saṅghika)** is one that has been given to the Saṅgha, relinquished to it.
**Knows:** he knows, "He is a senior (vuḍḍha)"; he knows, "He is sick"; he knows, "It has been given by the Saṅgha."
**Encroaching upon (anūpakhajja):** having intruded in upon.
**Should make his sleeping place:** if he spreads, or has spread, a sleeping place within the vicinity of the bed or the bench, or within the space of one entering or leaving, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); if he sits down upon it or lies down upon it, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya).
**Doing so with just this as the motive and no other:** there is no other motive whatsoever for making his sleeping place so as to encroach.
