[434] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the elder bhikkhus, in instructing the bhikkhunīs, were recipients of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. The group-of-six bhikkhus spoke thus: "The elder bhikkhus do not hold the instructing of the bhikkhunīs in much regard; the elder bhikkhus instruct the bhikkhunīs for the sake of material gain (āmisa)."
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the group-of-six bhikkhus speak thus: 'The elder bhikkhus do not hold the instructing of the bhikkhunīs in much regard; the elder bhikkhus instruct the bhikkhunīs for the sake of material gain'?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that you speak thus: 'The elder bhikkhus do not hold the instructing of the bhikkhunīs in much regard; the elder bhikkhus instruct the bhikkhunīs for the sake of material gain'?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed can you, foolish men, speak thus: 'The elder bhikkhus do not hold the instructing of the bhikkhunīs in much regard; the elder bhikkhus instruct the bhikkhunīs for the sake of material gain'? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu should speak thus: 'The bhikkhus instruct the bhikkhunīs for the sake of material gain,' there is an offense of Pācittiya."
