[579] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) made a bhikkhu of the group of seventeen laugh by tickling with the fingers (aṅgulipatodaka). That bhikkhu, convulsed and unable to catch his breath, died. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How indeed can the group-of-six bhikkhus make a bhikkhu laugh by tickling with the fingers?" … "Is it true, as is said, bhikkhus, that you made a bhikkhu laugh by tickling with the fingers?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed can you, foolish men, make a bhikkhu laugh by tickling with the fingers? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …" "And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'In tickling with the fingers, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya).'"
